Well, almost too many movies, to use my time up on. What with Sweeny Todd et al, I’m a little despondent that I can’t justify dipping into my NYE loot for the visual diversion. Luckily, I have Netflix and I’ve been randomly selecting some really quirky movies of late. Take last night’s Zardoz; odd movie indeed but quite a compelling view, of an alternative future culture. The floating stone head was actually fairly well done, if the acting wasn’t as convincing in places. It’s a John Boorman movie (Deliverance, Excalibur, Exorcist II) and really does demand some attention. Despite it being out when I was only 3 years old, I can’t believe I haven’t seen it before. I have to admit this caught me by surprise. I figured it would be a bit more of the same as 28 Days Later, with a bit of Hollywood thrown in this time around. Instead what I got was intelligent gore aplenty and a superbly simple plot. Thinking this now ranks up the top of my smart horrors; certainly a great choice for the evening and stands out for proving me wrong, when I’m the first in line to say you can’t make a better sequel.
