I made it through my first New York day without any kind of issue, which I must say, has surprised me. I’d been fed with the do’s and dont’s of the city from a few people, before heading out here (including past residents) and expected to be hassled if looking at someone, ignored when asking directions and possibly even confronted in a very negative manner. I’m bloody delighted to report that the complete opposite is true and while I suspect it’s the recent years of the zero tolerance policy, politeness still must have been in the genes; all the New Yorkers seemed helpful when needed and not overly obnoxious unlike the tourists, who seemed to be irritated to be breathing the same space.
New York reminds me of London and in fact on reflection, the surrounding area reminds me a lot of city areas around England. It’s not as rough in Manhattan at least, as I was led to believe – but then again, with only TV and movies to go by it shouldn’t be a surprise, should it. Continue reading
